What is Live and Local?

Live and Local is a live music industry development program jointly funded by the Live Music Office and Clarence Valley Council, coordinated on the ground by Events Delivered.

The initiative comprises a series of micro-festivals, professional development workshops, an industry forum and culminates in the writing of a Live Music Action Plan for the Clarence Valley.

Industry Forum

🎙 What does a flourishing live music scene look like in the Clarence Valley?

This was the question posed and debated at the LIVE and LOCAL Industry Forum, hosted by representatives of the Live Music Office in March 2022 at Grafton Regional Gallery.

Musicians, promoters, business premises and venue owners gathered along with Council representatives to look at the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities that exist in the Clarence Valley’s live music eco-system and explore how we can collectively support growth in the industry.

Following the industry forum, findings and discussion points have been distilled into a draft Live Music Action Plan for the Clarence Valley. This document will be shared with Council staff and Live and Local working group members, to solicit feedback to inform the final plan that will be adopted by Council. Watch this space for updates.

Professional Development Workshops

🎙 In association with MusicNSW, we invited music industry professionals to share insights drawn from their experience.

Workshops were conducted over Zoom and hosted by Phil from Events Delivered.

Micro-festivals

🎙 Live music returns to the Clarence Valley!

▶️ MULTIPLE VENUES ▶️ FREE LIVE MUSIC

30 local acts performed across 7 venues over 2 nights in Grafton and Yamba in February 2022.

The gigs were free to attend and were hosted in a range of venues including spaces that do not traditionally feature live music.

This initiative showcased the ease with which live music and other visual & performance arts can now be incorporated into high street business premises thanks to recent regulatory reforms to the NSW Liquor Act, Planning Act, Local Government Act and the Building Code.

Program Overview

Live and Local is designed to support the growth of the local live music industry and comprises 4 key components:

  1. A live music census is conducted to collect data that describes the existing live music ‘ecosystem’ in the Clarence Valley.

  2. Micro-festivals - the initiative empowers businesses to host local musicians for live performances, supported by council marketing and promotion.

  3. Professional Development workshops provide opportunities for music sector workers to improve their industry knowledge, strengthen their local network and to connect with the wider industry beyond the Clarence Valley.

  4. An Industry Forum is convened to guide better policy and regulation, to develop and implement long-term strategies that support the growth of the local live music industry. The outcomes of the industry forum discussions are a Live Music Action Plan adopted by Council.

Get Involved

Musician / Music industry worker

Would you like to shape the development of live local music in the Clarence Valley?

We would like to hear your ideas on how to best activate more performance venues and spaces, parks and streetscapes to create more opportunities for local musicians as well as local and visiting audiences.

The Clarence Valley Live and Local Working Group is being established so that you can provide input into how the project can support new opportunities for community groups and businesses to program live music on an on-going basis.

To get involved, call 0412 273 004 or send an email.

Business / Venue Owner

Have you ever considered hosting live music on your business premises? A one-off or regular live music event could attract new customers and greater awareness of your business, while providing increased opportunities for live music performance in the Clarence Valley.

Did you know that NSW planning regulations have been relaxed and simplified to allow live music performance in a range of business premises, requiring no additional Council licensing (NB. an APRA licence for live music performance is required and we can show you how and where to apply).

Live and Local comes with a budget to spend on a series of low-impact, low-risk acoustic performances later this year. Hosting a gig at your premises could lead the way for you to establish a regular live music event.

To get involved, call 0412 273 004 or send an email.

By joining the working group, you agree to, and understand the following:

  • You are willing to be contacted by Events Delivered and/or Clarence Valley Council with regard to requests for comments on the Live and Local Music Project for the duration of the project.

  • You are willing to work collaboratively with other members of the Group, to fairly represent the community.

  • You are willing to commit to meetings to progress the programming and scheduling of micro-festivals and the creation of a Live Music Action Plan.

  • Participation is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time.
